Do you have AOL and want out? Chances are you are
reading this now because you are trying to cancel your account without
success. First I have to tell you “Good for you”. AOL is and expensive and
severely overrated dial up service. The television commercials are
miss-leading if not entirely false. There are too many reputable and better
services out there for a couple dollars more such as
Cox Communication and Mediacom (Check your
area for Cable or DSL). These cable service providers give you the ability
to not tie up your phone line while being able to surf the web incredibly
faster.
There is an AOL for broadband option
that I have heard of, but this only means that they can stream the problems
to you much faster. I would not know since I would never touch AOL with a 10
foot pole! With the price of fast access Internet service coming down, any
and all dial-up services are rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
Anyway, today I was surfing around the web and ran into
several websites discussing the problems that I have known to be true about
attempting to cancel AOL. Some were hilarious, and some were of desperate
and victimized patrons of AOL.
It is true that AOL puts customers trying to cancel
through a battery of what I will call “cancellation blockers”. You will be
waiting on hold for a long time because they must be busy with cancellations
or they hope you will give up waiting and stay. The cancellation blockers
will seemingly read scripts from a screen to try to get you to stay with
AOL. I have experienced this myself several years ago with a customer of
mine who wised up about AOL.
Many times, even if you have a cancellation number, you
will not be canceled. I have heard and read of many instances where the
charges continued to be made to a poor and unfortunate subscribers account.
If these continue to plague you it may become necessary to cancel or change
your debit or credit card just to get away! In any event, notify your
financial institution of your cancellation and tell them to block future
charges.
I have heard of some of the following (some funny, some
true) solutions to finally break away;
1) I am moving out of the country.
2) I am selling my computer.
3) I am going into the federal witness protection
program.
4) I am going to close my banking or credit card
account.
5) My phone is being shut off.
6) AOL is too intrusive to my computer.
7) I get too much spam.
8) AOL is evil.
9) Beings from another planet use AOL to control our
minds.
10) SPYWARE! ADWARE! POP UPS!
11) AOL is radioactive.
12) AOL slows down my computer.
